The rising state of crime and insecurity in the country has prompted calls from researchers that the federal government should consider the use of cyberspace technology to boost national security, saying it has contributed to the development of many countries and now critical to the socio-economic success of the growth of most nations.
Director-general of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Engr PeterJack, during the international conference on cyberspace governance in Abuja with the theme “Cyberspace Governance, The Imperative for National and Economic Security” which was organised by the Institute for Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) in collaboration with Nasarawa State University, Keffi, disclosed that the researchers have identified four areas of focus which includes innovations and opportunities, cyber criminality, cybersecurity and frameworks and will “present their findings on how we can ensure that our nation’s cyberspace remains secure in the face of growing threats from within and outside the country.”
He stated that the agency places a premium on cybersecurity and has realised that it can diminish the gains that Nigeria has experienced in the area of Information and Communication Technology. “To this end, we identified national National e-security and law enforcement as one of the key sectors of our national ICT for development strategic action plan.”
